Should Ceiling Fans Be Left On When You’re Not Home?
Should I leave the ceiling fan on at home when I leave?
I am away from home during peak hot hours: 12-6pm. Should I leave the ceiling fans on before I go to work? Should I adjust the thermostat to a higher temp before I leave and the lower when I get home. Just trying to save money on electrical bill and wear and tear on my unit.
Answer:
Turn the fans off and raise the AC temp when you’re not home to save the most money. The fans aren’t cooling anything – they’re just moving air around. And, if the AC is making the house cooler, a significant portion of that cold air will be lost through the walls and ceiling, resulting in wasted energy.

Easy Way to Clean Popcorn Ceilings
Is there an easy way to clean popcorn ceilings above ceiling fans and around ceiling vents? ?
We moved in in October and the ceiling fans were dirty, but now after a few months, they were horrible. I am disabled and had to have someone help me clean them. Now the ceilings still look dingy and are full of dust near the fans and around the vents. I’m afraid to use a broom and knock all of the popcorn off. Is there a gentle way to do this?
Answer:
I would love to know an answer to this question. We also have dingy popcorn ceilings and our ceiling fans didn’t help the problem they’d scatter dust everywhere.
Our solution was to scrape off the popcorn (messy dirty job) and re-paint the ceiling.
We tried just to paint the ceiling without removing the popcorn and it made a huge mess because the popcorn would stick to the roller and goober up all the paint.
Also, using a broom to try to just clean the ceiling knocks off the little pieces and makes an even bigger mess.
While it’s difficult to clean those popcorn ceilings once they’ve become dirty, the best thing to do is to prevent it from happening in the first place and the easiest way to do this is to clean your ceiling fans regularly. Check out our simple guide on How to Clean Your Ceiling Fan
Using Ceiling Fans In The Summer
What Direction Should Ceiling Fans Turn In The Summer?
Most ceiling fans have a switch to change the direction they turn – either clockwise or counter clockwise. Determining which way is most beneficial during the hot summer weather depends on which way the ceiling fan blades were mounted. In the summer ceiling fans should be set to turn in the direction which causes them to push air upwards rather than blowing the hot air down. Obviously this should be reversed in the winter where you want to keep the hot air down in the room. The ceiling fan direction can usually be set by means of switch located on the ceiling fan motor housing. Setting your ceiling fan direction correctly and using them wisely can help you reduce both your air conditioning and heating bills by cutting back on the electricity needed to cool and heat your home. Ceiling fans should be turned off when you leave home for extended periods. Leaving a ceiling fan running while you are not home will use unnecessary electricity.

What are the basic steps involved in replacing ceiling fans?
Replacing A Ceiling Fan
Basic steps involved in replacing ceiling fans
I’ve got a couple of ceiling fans I want to replace in my townhouse. As I’ve never replaced a ceiling fan before, thought I’d see where I needed to start, what the rough costs involved were, etc.?
Answer:
Since you already have existing ceiling fans, replacement and installation of a new ceiling fan is really very simple as long as you wish to install the new ceiling fans in the same location. First, you’ll need to select and purchase new ceiling fans that are compatible with your room and ceiling height. Prior to removing the old ceiling fans and beginning installation of the new fans, make sure that the power is off. You should turn off the breaker controlling power to the fan for safety rather than simply relying on the switch. If you do choose to simply turn the wall switch off, tape it down so someone doesn’t inadvertently come into the room and switch it on while you are working. Remove the motor housing of the old fan and disconnect the wiring – you may have to remove the ceiling fan blades prior to doing this. Next, you should see several screws or bolts on the ceiling mount. Remove the screws and ceiling mount and place old fan to the side. You should now be able to wire the new fan and mount the motor assembly in the same location using the new ceiling mount included with the fan. Follow the assembly directions provided with your new fan for attaching the motor housing and ceiling fan blades.
If the old ceiling fan is functional, you may wish to consider re-installing it in a garage or other area.
